Use this when you have length and width (or an area plus one side) and need a quick, consistent answer in acres, hectares, square feet, or square meters.
If your parcel isn’t a rectangle, split it into simple shapes and add the areas — or use a survey.
How it works
- Convert both sides to the same unit.
- Multiply: area = length × width.
- Convert the area into the unit you care about (ac, ha, ft², m²).
Which unit should you use?
- Acres: most US land listings and farm/ranch pricing
- Hectares: metric land management and international work
- ft² / m²: zoning, lot coverage, and smaller parcels
- US survey acre: some older legal descriptions (tiny difference, but documents may specify it)
Quick conversions
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 acre | 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m² |
| 1 US survey acre | 4,046.87261 m² |
| 1 hectare | 10,000 m² = 2.47105 acres |
Planning add‑ons
Once you know the area, the calculator can also help you:
- Estimate perimeter for fencing (rectangle only)
- Estimate total price from a price per acre
- Split into n equal lots (area per lot)
Tips and pitfalls
- Don’t mix feet and meters in the same multiplication.
- For deeds and permitting, use the unit your documents specify.
- For transactions or disputes, verify with a licensed surveyor.
