Gallon conversion explained
Recipes, tank specs, and brewery logs mix U.S. customary gallons, imperial gallons, and metric liters. This Gallon Calculator converts through liters (the SI base volume) so you can jump between any pair of units without remembering nested ratios.
How the conversion works
Each liquid measure has an exact liter equivalent: US gallon = 3.785411784 L, US quart = 0.946352946 L, UK gallon = 4.54609 L, etc. The calculator multiplies by the source’s liter constant, then divides by the target’s constant.

Worked examples
- Fuel tank reference
Convert 3 U.S. gallons to liters.
Result: specify 11.36 L on documentation.
- Export recipe
A brewery exports a 12 L pilot batch to the UK. Express it in imperial pints.
Result: list 21.1 UK pints on the brew sheet.
Tips and pitfalls
- Always confirm whether "gallon" means U.S. (128 fl oz) or imperial (160 fl oz); the difference is ~20%.
- For kitchen work, convert to cups or milliliters to avoid fractional gallons; for industrial orders, stick with gallons or liters to avoid rounding errors.
- When sharing specs internationally, include both liter and gallon values to eliminate conversion mistakes in procurement.
- Use milliliters for lab glassware; the calculator keeps mL conversions only one click away.
